I can tell you honestly i have been counting down the days to this match since it was announced that the english and the united states would be playing in the same group 188 days ago. not only does the match have a global buzz but it has a lot of importance on the rest of this world cup as well. if either team loses they will have to perform in both of their next two games to have a shot to get out of group. relive the game as i kept a running diary of england v. usa from south africa!
we're 20 minutes from kickoff. i just laid my daughter down for you nap. here is hoping she's down for at least the next two hours. i am a little sad she isn't going to experience this with me, but she would never remember it anyway. i'll just lie later and say we watched it together. here is to hoping it will be a good lie.
abc just put together a little thing with will ferrell, mark walberg, and russell brand. little giggle to get things going. i love the part where brand takes a shot at scotland while kissing the union jack. "i'm kissing this part here in the middle, not the blue part because that is scotland". poor scotland never gets any love.
the only bad part about soccer being a commercial free sport, they pack them in during pregame and you don't get much analysis. the good part is that you get to see previews for wipeout starting june 22nd on abc. needless to say i've already set the "series record" on my dvr.
starting squads - usa: jozy altidore and michael findley up front. clint dempsey, michael bradley, ricardo clark, and landon donovan in the midfield. carlos bocanegra (capitan), oguchi onyewu, jay demerrit, steve cherundolo. tim howard in goal. i like findley up front to start. he adds speed that i think will help early for the usa. i expect to see him taken out at the 60 minute mark though if the usa needs a goal.
england: wayne rooney and emele hesky as strikers. aaron lennon, steve gerrard (capitan), michael lampard and james milner in the middle. glen johnson, ledley king, john terry, and ashley cole. a little surprise with robert green in goal. a lot of turmoil internally for the english. we'll see if that carries over to the field at all.

2:10 - donovan gets his first touch of the game. if the us wants to win this game they are going to have to see a lot of him. he does have a tendency to disappear.
2:30 - first whistle, findley offside, no danger.
3:35 - steven gerrard is left all alone and slips into the box for an easy goal. absolutely crushing for the united states. still early enough where you can't panic but also you need to attack a little more now. that goal happened because ricardo clark stopped marking gerrard all together. letting him run into the box free. horrible defense. england
